For the first Paper Team Live event, Alex and Nick go to WonderCon 2017 to host a panel on the dialogue between TV writers and their fans.
This relationship has become a vital tool for many television shows — and one that is often very fickle. That’s why we’ve invited writers and assistants from several beloved shows to share their thoughts on the issue.

Panelists include Ray Utarnachitt (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Jill Weinberger (Chicago Fire), Tennessee Martin (Lucifer), Diya Mishra (The Tick), and Taylor Brogan (The Shannara Chronicles).

What does a typical conversation look like between a writers’ room and their fandom? How much attention do TV writers pay to fans? Have fans’ voices changed the course of a story or character? What is it like going from being a fan of a show to being involved directly in the creative decisions?

Much like every year, I’m going this week-end to WonderCon (the 2017 edition is back in the ol’ Anaheim center — I guess it didn’t agree with Los Angeles).

This time though, WonderCon is personal. (Or professional?)

If you follow Paper Team, then you already know Nick and I will be hosting our very own panel (and first “Paper Team Live”) at WonderCon 2017.

In fact, we’re closing out the con; as in: we’re literally the last panel of the entire convention.
Ain’t that a treat.

So, what will this historic panel be about? Here’s the title and official description:

“Writer Versus Fandom: TV Writers’ Rooms and Fan Interaction”
The dialogue between TV writers and their fans is a vital tool for many television shows—but one that can prove fickle. From producers, to staff writers and assistants, Alex Freedman and Nick Watson (Paper Team) invite people who work on some of your favorite TV shows to share their thoughts on this unique relationship.

The panel will be held Sunday, April 2 at 4:00PM in Room 209.

Alex goes on the road at SDCC 2016 with Maggie Herman, assistant to the Executive Producer/Line Producer on the Amazon series Bosch, to discuss every TV writer’s favorite topic: budgeting. How much does an hour of television cost? And how do scripts get broken down into money?

It’s a double Paper Team first, as we welcome our very first guest-star, and have our very first “On the Road” episode while Alex drives up from San Diego Comic-Con 2016 with Maggie (and another surprise guest).

What is the real cost of an hour of TV? What is the process of breaking scripts into producible selection of scenes? Why would anyone want to become a line producer? What was Maggie’s favorite cosplay of the con?
All these questions and many more are answered in this special edition of Paper Team.

NOTE: I (Alex) recorded this podcast while literally on the road (riding shotgun in Maggie’s car). There should be minimal background noise after the post-production work done since I fixed it in post–but just in case, prepare your ears.
