Since I’m going off on a month-long vacation in a couple of days I’m starting to pack my suitcase. I won’t have Internet there since it’s the middle of nowhere.
That means hopefully no procrastination…Although there’s gonna be family there so who knows.
Anyway I’m packing a couple of books because I want to study and write whilst I’m under the sun. I also want to try out the 7-day screenplay method.
I’ll have loads of time to think in the car, 7-hour trip!

In other news I read last night the Caprica pilot, and I’ve got to say it’s looking pretty good.
Going on Jill Gollick’s footsteps, the structure of the (2-hour) Caprica pilot was:

Act One — 23 pages
Act Two — 13 pages
Act Three — 18 pages
Act Four — 15 pages
Act Five — 12 pages
Act Six — 6 pages
Act Seven — 6 pages
Act Eight — 9 pages

I was a huge Battlestar Galactica fan, and then season 3 happened, so I wasn’t really excited about Caprica, especially when I heard it was going to be Dallas in space. I read a couple of months ago what the basic story was going to be about, but I forgot about it.
Then last night I read the script and was completely blown away by the end of act one. Suffice to say if you don’t really know the story of the show, it’s going to blow you away too.
Anyway, the technology is also very advanced in Caprica, nothing like BSG, so I’m waiting to see what’s up with the CGI (although I’m sure it’s going to be good given what we have on BSG).
The basic mythology is well set-up but don’t expect to see much tie-ins with BSG.
Only a year to wait…

Pilot script week?

by Alex on July 6, 2008

Since it’s almost Christmas (give or take 5 months and a half) and also since I received such an (un)large number of request, whether it to be in the comment section or on my e-mail (yes I have an e-mail, look at your right), as well as because I’m just too cool for school (after all, I’m on vacation right now), I have decided that I would post right here right now for a week (or until I’m shutdown) all the pilot scripts I talked about yesterday.
Yes I’m that cool, and suicidal.

If you intend to share or else those scripts please link back to this site and e-mail me any complaints.
Comments are always appreciated.

Captain Cook’s Extraordinary Atlas
Dollhouse
Good Behavior
Men of a Certain Age
The United States of Tara
The Unusuals
Warehouse 13

I am now going into hiding.

EDIT: New “Box” links added. Because Box is great.
EDIT2: Pilot script week is over! Thanks everyone! Enjoy the blog.

The (winning) Books

It’s Amazon day it seems as I’m about to promote another bunch of books…but here fortunately related to writing.

Jill Golick just posted about summer readings, and especially about what she is going to read, Pamela DouglasWriting the TV Drama Series.
I read that book a couple of months ago and found it very interesting. As I also said in a comment I posted on her article, my next read will be Larry Brody’s Television Writing from the Inside Out which promises to be an interesting read. It seems to delve more on the technical aspect of writing for TV.

Nontheless, with Douglas’ book earlier this year, I also read other interesting writing books:
- Successful Television Writing by Lee Goldberg and Willliam Rabkin (Kindle Link)
- Crafty TV Writing by Alex Epstein

I read as well books that pertained more about the biz and what goes on “Behind the Scenes”:
- A Martian Wouldn’t Say That compiled by Leonard B. Stern and Diane L. Robison (quick read but hilarious –or is it scary?-)
- Desperate Networks by Bill Carter (Kindle Link)

Last but not least there was also this book that is more a bible in itself: This Business of Television, by Howard J. Blumenthal and Oliver R. Goodenough (Kindle Link).

If you get your hands on any of these books I strongly suggest you read them, they are just awesome (and incidentally full of advice).

Since my first “real” (read “4 days”) trip to L.A. will be in September, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve done my research now, and Ken Levine just posted about where to find writers in L.A. (obviously not to give out your spec).

I think I’ll give it a try, though not necessairly to find writers, rather to save money (because it’s obvious writers always go to the cheap place, right?).

The Procrastinator

Just came across this interesting article about how to write a genre movie in 7 days.

Since I’ll soon be out for about a month without Internet access nor anything else really I think I’ll try it out in the wild!

The big problem against writing anything is probably procrastination, and to be honest I’m a huge procrastinator, so this is gold.
