TV Mid-Season '09: The Complete Review – What is coming back

As we know, who says new year, says new schedule.

Time for The Complete Review’s awesome second part about the mid-season.
Let’s get it on and start things off with what is coming back.
I am not here talking about shows that premiered in fall, rather shows from last year that we have all been waiting for (or not?).

They’re back again. With a full stomach.

Flashpoint – Season 2 (premieres Jan. 9): As previously reported, including the last 4 episodes from Season One, the second season should be comprised of 22 fresh episodes. Can it still be the hit it was last year? Only time (and Nielsen) will tell.

Friday Night Lights – Season 3 (premieres Jan. 16): The season that has already been shown on DirecTV. I’m waiting for the HD release to watch it. Has it refound its Season One epicness?

Scrubs – Season 8 (premieres Jan. 6): If you still haven’t heard, don’t be confused; Scrubs has moved to ABC due to shitty programming by NBC (amongst other things). If you want to get spoiled on the season/series-finale, there’s an interview with Bill Lawrence (the show’s creator) talking about that and what will happen once he and Zach Braff leave at the end of this year (yes, the show will probably continue in some form).
Lost – Season 5 (premieres Jan. 21): They got off it. Now how do they go back?

24 – Season 7 (premieres Jan. 11): 24: Redemption was crap, and so were the first 15 minutes of the Season 7 premiere. Mix that with Tony Almeida coming back from his grave as a villain, and you’ve got another crappy 24 season on your hands. Or perhaps not?

Reaper – Season 2 (premieres March 17): Cool first season, although I preferred Chuck to it.

Big Love – Season 3 (premieres Jan. 18): Never saw the point of this show.
Flight of the Conchords – Season 2 (premieres Jan. 18): I am told it is awesomely great.

The L Word – Season 6 (premieres Jan. 18): Haven’t watched the show since Season 3 so can’t really comment on it.

The Big Unknown
The Tudors – Season 3 (Spring): How can a historical show continue to reinvent itself? By changing History.

Battlestar Galactica – Season 4 (or rather 5) (premieres Jan. 16): This show has disappointed me so much since the third season, I just want to get it over with.

Damages – Season 2 (premieres Jan. 7): The first season was epic and the second is supposed to begin where we last left off our awesome characters. Unfortunately it is quite probable that this second season will be less formidable than the first, though still quite entertaining nonetheless.

The Big Unknown
Rescue Me – Season 5 (Spring): The latest season was just okay with completely useless mini episodes. Let’s hope Rescue Me can wake up (I was about to do a Rescue Me play on word but waaaaay too easy). Michael J. Fox is coming back to TV with a role as Janet’s new love interest.

Now that we’ve seen new seasons, we’ll get a good look at the fresh new shows coming our way for this mid-season.
My guess is: awesomeness is coming.

Did you know I had a Furby?

I’m probably the only person that hasn’t seen yet The Dark Knight, although to be fair the movie just came out today here in France.
I hope to see it (again?) when I’m over the Atlantic on a giant Imax screen but for now I’ll try to watch it in 35mm.

Moving on.
Catching up on my shows, I watched yesterday the season 3 premiere of Psych.
I must say, this show is getting awesomer and awesomer as it goes.
I haven’t yet watched the other s3 episodes but from what I’ve read, it’s going to be as cool, if not cooler, as the premiere.

Shawn’s hair-do is also pretty “cool” (for the 90s).

Speaking of Psych, yes, this post’s title is a direct quote from the show.
In the s3 premiere episode, Shawn (re)discovers that he had a Furby when he was young (and other childhood artifacts).

I wonder how young he was when he had that Furby, especially since I have a Furby of my own and I’m barely 20 now.
And this brings us to tonight’s word.
This, as well as a blog comment, led me to think about (my) childhood toys and the fact that my room hasn’t changed in over 10 years. Fortunately I’m moving out soon but as I pointed out elsewhere, I have loads of (crappy) geeky stuff I haven’t used in a long long time (and probably won’t ever use again).
To name a few:
Magic The Gathering cards. I have tons of them. So much so that a few years back I tried to evaluate my collection and as far as I’m aware, I have worth 1000€ of cards.
– Loads of Gameboy/Gameboy advance/Nintendo DS games.
Star Wars: Attack of The Clones trading cards. Yes, for real.
– Buffy and Angel trading cards.
– “TV Based” books. And I’m not talking about the good kind, rather the commercial-type ones; you know, those based on the best TV shows ever.
Marvel Heroclix boxset(s).
– Tons of TV/Movie figurines. Like those Battlestar Galactica ones.
I should also point out that I have never been to Comic-Con.

Damn you TV/Movie fanboyism and geekness!

Tauron trip

Since I’m going off on a month-long vacation in a couple of days I’m starting to pack my suitcase. I won’t have Internet there since it’s the middle of nowhere.
That means hopefully no procrastination…Although there’s gonna be family there so who knows.
Anyway I’m packing a couple of books because I want to study and write whilst I’m under the sun. I also want to try out the 7-day screenplay method.
I’ll have loads of time to think in the car, 7-hour trip!

In other news I read last night the Caprica pilot, and I’ve got to say it’s looking pretty good.
Going on Jill Gollick‘s footsteps, the structure of the (2-hour) Caprica pilot was:

Act One – 23 pages
Act Two – 13 pages
Act Three – 18 pages
Act Four – 15 pages
Act Five – 12 pages
Act Six – 6 pages
Act Seven – 6 pages
Act Eight – 9 pages

I was a huge Battlestar Galactica fan, and then season 3 happened, so I wasn’t really excited about Caprica, especially when I heard it was going to be Dallas in space. I read a couple of months ago what the basic story was going to be about, but I forgot about it.
Then last night I read the script and was completely blown away by the end of act one. Suffice to say if you don’t really know the story of the show, it’s going to blow you away too.
Anyway, the technology is also very advanced in Caprica, nothing like BSG, so I’m waiting to see what’s up with the CGI (although I’m sure it’s going to be good given what we have on BSG).
The basic mythology is well set-up but don’t expect to see much tie-ins with BSG.
Only a year to wait…
